The History, an ancient cosmetic for the few

The healing and cosmetic properties of milk have been known since ancient times.

Queen Cleopatra was in the habit of immersing herself completely to keep her beauty intact and preserve her radiant skin. In her case, legend has it that no fewer than seven hundred donkeys supplied the milk for her daily baths. Poppaea, second wife of the Roman emperor Nero, also loved to devote herself to this ritual

The famous Greek physician Theophrastus recommended it precisely as compresses or baths on inflamed skin, because he had understood that the lactic ferments contained in whey were responsible for restoring the skin’s natural acidity, and he used them against inflammation and bacterial infections.

HOW IT WORKS ON THE SKIN

ANTIOXIDANT ACTION

It stimulates the formation of Glutathione. Its particular chemical structure, composed of three amino acids, makes it one of the most powerful antioxidants present in the human body. It in fact counteracts the degenerative power of free radicals, protecting the proteins present in the skin and other oxidising chemical compounds.

MOISTURISING ACTION

The elements contained moisturise and nourish the skin; they in fact have the property of retaining water and active ingredients on the skin, producing a hydrolipidic film that acts as a barrier and prevents water evaporation.

PROTECTIVE ACTION

The pH-regulating action promotes the regeneration of the skin’s protective mantle, restoring defences against the action of germs and external agents. In addition, the antimicrobial activities of whey are an incredible ally against the proliferation of acne and pimples.

ELASTICISING ACTION

The amino acids contained in whey proteins, by strengthening the collagen fibres of the epidermis, help maintain the elasticity and firmness of the skin, making it brighter and reinvigorated.

SOOTHING ACTION

It is suitable for all skin types including sensitive or irritated skin.
Whey treatments are beneficial, but also calming and relaxing, and gently restore the skin’s natural balance.

What does whey contain?

Whey is the product of the liquid part of milk that separates during the cheese-making process.
Unlike milk, it contains only a minimal percentage of fat, but is rich in branched-chain amino acids, whey proteins, B vitamins, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and iodine. As well as immunostimulating substances such as immunoglobulins and bioactive proteins such as lactoferrin, also present in breast milk.

Its particular composition makes it a very powerful antioxidant as well as having moisturising and soothing properties. The acidity of whey naturally regulates the pH of the skin thus promoting the regeneration of the protective acid mantle.
